The Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) is pleased to announce the launch of its redesigned website, www.gyca.org. The new site design is structured to make information and opportunities easily accessible to the international GYCA community, enabling members to take full advantage of GYCA's tools and resources and connect to other young HIV and AIDS activists.
GYCA is a youth-led global network of over 4,500 young leaders and adult allies working on youth and HIV/AIDS in 150 countries world-wide. GYCA's mission is to empower young leaders with the skills, knowledge, resources and opportunities they need to scale up HIV/AIDS interventions amongst their peers.
GYCA is one of the lead organizers of the Vienna YouthForce, a coalition of 5 youth organizations developing the youth program for the XVII International AIDS Conference in Vienna in collaboration with the International AIDS Society.
GYCA RFPs and staff met to discuss RFP's work, challenges and goals. We discussed how to help the RFPs create new policies to ensure greater accountability, communicativeness, ownership and responsiveness. RFPs who take leadership and contribute on a regular basis are often rewarded with free opportunities to represent GYCA at international events such as this conference. RFPs and NFPs who fall out of contact and shirk their responsibilities will be asked to leave and will be replaced. The GYCA member’s meeting is tomorrow (Wednesday) from 6-8pm in the Bild hostel. In attendance: Reshma Pattni (GYCA Program Director), Sydney (Program Officer- South Secretariat), Lindsay Menard-Freeman (Program Officer- North...
This lively session was a great change from the “same old” discussions of the need for youth participation, featuring GYCA members Ricardo Baruch (GYCA Board of Directors), Igor Mocorro (former NFP from the Philippines), Elisabet Fadul (Dominican Republic), Caitlin Padgett (Co-Founder and International Advisory Council member of Youth RISE from Canada), as well as several other youth and adult leaders. The session’s moderators (Elisabet and Caitlin) emphasized the need for accountability both from adults and from young people to make commitments and follow through on them. GYCA's Igor Mocorro from the Philippines asked Michel Kazatchine (Director of the Global Fund) to commit to ensuring that all Global Fund Country...
Dear GYCA members, Hello once again from Nepal. This is my final blog post wherein I will be talking about the final outcomes of my project, along with the successes and challenges faced throughout. We were aiming to increase the number of youngsters having right information about peer-pressure, drug use and HIV and AIDS and empowering young Nepalese to prevent and not be a part of peer pressure driving the vicious cycle of drug use and HIV through extensive participation with collaboration and partnership with school administration, parents, management committees and other civic organizations. We were able to reach 370 youngsters with the right information among which 75% showed raised awareness level in the post-test survey. We...
I am glad to share with you this and for all upcoming leaders, hope it is beneficial to you all! One of the challenges HELTS project faced was the initial misconception the community larders had about the project. Given the fact that the areas of operation (Slums) for the project had uncoordinated community structures due over crowding of residents and free entry and exit of community members without notice from the community leaders. Therefore at the beginning of the project, when we introduced the project to community leaders for support, they thought it was some business venture expecting payment in return. We overcame this by intervening a brief meeting together with community leaders to further disseminate the goal and...
On December 1st, 2007, members of the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) commemorated World AIDS Day with 104 local events in 34 countries. The goal of the events was to highlight the pressing need to build youth leadership and to listen to the voices of young leaders fighting HIV and AIDS in their communities. Despite the fact that 40% of the 2.5 million new infections each year occur in young people aged 15 to 24, young leaders are uniting to inspire others from our generation to take action against HIV and AIDS on our own terms - through street theater, care for AIDS orphans, peer education and work with young injecting drug users. GYCA events were organized in partnership with the World AIDS Campaign's "Take the Lead" World...
For World AIDS Day 2008, GYCA is partnering again with World AIDS Campaign to coordinate youth-led World AIDS Day events worldwide. This year’s theme is leadership: which gives you an opportunity to highlight youth leadership through a wide range of possible activities in your community. Last year, GYCA mobilized its powerful network and members organized 50 events in 30 countries.1 This year, we are hoping to target more youth in more countries to “Take the Lead” in ending the spread of HIV! Focusing on our theme of leadership, you can organize an event that best suits the needs of your own community. It could be a networking meeting, a training, a film screening, a panel discussion, a letter writing session to public...

The conference has been very direction action oriented this year, protests have been held every day on a variety of topics and issues. Today, three different protests happened inside the venue and one rally happened outside the conference centre walls. Even before the penalties began, the protesters were setting their stages. In the global village, participants were talking about meeting points and messages that would be used later in the day. Two of the protests were from the organization NSWP: The Global Network of Sex Work Projects. The NSWP have had a presence in the conferences...
Before I take you through to what has happened on Tuesday 20 July 2010.
